Quick picks:

  • Splitceipt for itemized receipts, unlimited manual bills, and guest links.
  • Splitwise for recurring household expenses and full browser access.
  • tricount for group trips, multiple currencies, and offline use.
  • Settle Up for offline groups and browser-based balance viewing.

  • Splid for one simple offline group with no sign-up.
  • Spliit for a free, open-source group ledger in the browser with no account.

These seven apps solve different problems. I built Splitceipt, and I link to official product information so you can compare its fit with the alternatives.

How I compared

I reviewed official product pages, support documents, and store listings on September 25, 2026. On October 19, 2026 I added Tab, Splid, and Spliit, and updated Splitwise for its free Itemize feature in the US and UK. Features and plan limits can change; check the linked source before choosing based on one feature.

*Subscription prices vary by country, platform, promotion, and billing period, so this guide compares free-versus-paid capabilities rather than quoting prices that may quickly become outdated.

Best bill splitting app for receipts: Splitceipt

For restaurant bills, Splitceipt scans the receipt, lets you correct detected items and assign them to people, then calculates each person’s share. It also tracks group balances and repayments. Free includes unlimited manual bills and 5 AI receipt scans per month; Pro adds unlimited scans, saved receipt images, analytics, and exports.

Choose another app if you need offline entry or automatically recurring bills; Splitceipt does not currently offer either.

Receipt-first without an expense cap: Try Splitceipt with unlimited manual bills and 5 AI receipt captures each month. Download it on iOS or Android.

Best app for recurring shared bills: Splitwise

Splitwise suits ongoing household ledgers, especially when recurring expenses, unequal splits, and a full web app matter. Its free tier currently allows up to four new expenses per day; Pro removes that limit and adds search. Since October 14, 2026, receipt scanning is free in the US and UK through Itemize, where friends claim items by QR code without the app; elsewhere it is part of Pro. Choose it when your group already uses Splitwise or needs those ledger features.

Best bill splitting app for trips: tricount

tricount is designed for shared trip expenses, with collaborative tracking, multiple currencies, automatic calculations, offline access, and photo sharing. Its Google Play description says it is free with no limits, while the store badge says “Contains ads.” It fits groups mainly splitting totals rather than assigning each receipt item.

Settle Up offers offline sync, multi-currency groups, simplified transfers, and browser links for checking a group balance without installing the app. It fits trips with unreliable connectivity or members who only need to view balances. Receipt photos are supported, but AI item extraction is not its main workflow.

Best for quick restaurant splits on iPhone: Tab

Tab is built for the moment the check arrives. Take a photo of an itemized receipt, Tab detects the items and prices, and everyone joins the bill on their own phone to claim what they ordered. Shared items can be split between several people, and tax and tip are divided proportionally. Its App Store listing shows it as free with no in-app purchases, in English and Spanish.

Choose another app if anyone in the group uses Android or you need running balances across many bills; Tab is iPhone only and focuses on splitting one bill at a time.

Best for one simple offline group: Splid

Splid is a clean group ledger that works without sign-up and without a connection. The free version covers one group; more groups and Splid Plus are one-time in-app purchases rather than a subscription. It converts currencies automatically and exports a PDF summary. Receipt scanning is not listed, so expenses are entered by hand.

I compared it with Splitceipt in detail in my free Splid alternative guide, checked on October 6, 2026.

Best free, open-source option: Spliit

Spliit is a free, open-source expense splitter that runs in the browser with no account and no ads, plus an iPhone app that syncs groups through iCloud. It supports recurring expenses, splits by percentage, shares, or amount, categories, and receipt image attachments. AI receipt scanning is labeled beta. Hosting is funded by donations, and you can self-host it from its GitHub repository.

Choose another app if you want a native Android app or production-ready receipt scanning.

For one-off Splitceipt bills, guests can view a shared browser link and mark their repayment without an account. Ongoing Group members need accounts to collaborate. There is no direct Splitwise importer; export your history for reference, then recreate active groups and unsettled balances.

Quick pick: Choose Splitceipt for itemized receipt splitting, Splitwise for recurring household bills, tricount for group trips, Settle Up for offline use and browser balance links, Tab for a quick split on iPhone, Splid for one simple offline group, or Spliit for a free, open-source ledger.
