Disclosure: I built Splitceipt. Details for every app were checked against its official website or store listing on October 19, 2026. Features and limits change; check the linked source before choosing.
Short answer: Most people look for a Splitwise alternative because of the free plan’s daily expense limit, receipt scanning behind Pro outside the US and UK, or friends who will not install another app. tricount and Splid are strong for trips and offline use, Settle Up adds browser balance links, Kittysplit and Spliit need no sign-up, Splitser handles payment requests in Europe, and Splitceipt splits receipts item by item with browser guest links.
Why people look for a Splitwise alternative
- Daily expense limit. Splitwise’s free plan currently allows up to four new expenses per day; Pro removes it. See Splitwise Pro.
- Receipt scanning. Since October 14, 2026, Itemize scans and splits restaurant receipts for free in the US and UK. Elsewhere, scanning is a Pro feature. Details in Does Splitwise scan receipts?
- Friends without the app. Itemize lets diners join by QR code, but ongoing Splitwise balances still live in Splitwise accounts.

Splitceipt: for itemized receipts and guest links
Splitceipt scans a receipt, lets you check the detected items, and assigns each item to the people who shared it. Free includes unlimited manual bills and groups plus 5 AI receipt scans per month, in any country. Friends who do not install the app can review their share and mark their repayment through a browser guest link.
Choose another app if you need offline entry, automatically recurring expenses, or a direct Splitwise import; Splitceipt does not offer those yet. See the features and plans.
tricount: for trips and multiple currencies
tricount is built for shared trip costs, with collaborative tracking, multiple currencies, automatic calculations, offline access, and photo sharing. Its Google Play description says it is free with no limits, while the store badge says “Contains ads.”

Settle Up: for offline groups and browser balance links
Settle Up offers offline sync, multi-currency groups, simplified transfers, and browser links so members can check a group balance without installing the app. Receipt photos can be attached, but item extraction is not listed.

Moving from Splitwise
There is no universal importer. Settle open balances in Splitwise first, export your history to CSV for your records, then recreate only the active groups in the new app. Moving one group at a time is easier than switching everything at once.
Quick pick: Splitceipt for itemized receipts and guest links, tricount for trips, Settle Up for offline groups with browser balances, Splid for one offline group, Kittysplit for no sign-up in a browser, Splitser for payment requests in Europe, and Spliit for a free, open-source ledger.
